Some of My Students' Work!
Here are just a few examples of some student work that involved using innovative technologies.
EDL 701 -- Leadership and Organizational Development -- Presentations of Student Applied Case Studies
EDL 701 is one of two initial courses for the Ed.D. Doctoral Program. In it, students are exposed to, and explore, theories of leadership, organizations, and organizational development. It is also a course where students are asked to hone their analytic and academic writing skills. One major assignment is to undertake an Applied Case Study project on a topic of interest. In this project, students identify and analyze an organizational problem and, using theories they have explored, provide and evaluate recommendations. The case is written and is also presented in some digital format. Here are some examples.

EDL 680 -- Leadership Perspectives -- leadership style concepts through digital moviemaking
EDL 680 is the introductory course for the 092 Administrative Certification Program. In it, students learn about theories of leadership, including theories of leadership styles. Through these student-developed videos, I ask students to try and explain leadership style and the key components of their theories. I do not restrict the content or scenario. Each person or pair develops their own approach.

EDL 681 -- Leadership Development -- communication concepts through xtranormal movies
In this class, students learn about the complex communication skills and strategies that leaders must develop to be effective. Here are examples of animated role play scenarios developed and created by students using the software application xtranormal to explore a variety of school-based "difficult conversations" that a leader might have.

EDL 711: How I Write a Content Brief
While EDL 711 is a doctoral level policy course and students learn much about the policy process while also doing quite rigorous policy analyses, I also try to encourage them to think in concrete terms about their writing process and how they can improve it. Some of the student in our EDL and Ed.D. programs need writing support, but even those who are good writers can benefit from reflective practice to become even better. I ask my students in EDL711 to create a short multimedia piece on how they write their content briefs -- a 2-page synthesis of the main points of two articles. Here are a couple of examples. |

EDL 689 Seminar: Leadership and Supervision
In this course, I ask students to take on an ambitious group project that requires they develop an action plan to advance a particular area of need for a school or district. I ask the students to identify an area of need that is currently important for their schools or districts so that they can provide their work and ideas to leadership to consider as they plan for, or undertake, change. In particular, I ask students to think about how the plan to message their work: who are the different audiences, what are the best modes of communication for each, etc. Students are very strongly encouraged to use technology to both undertake and share their work, even if they do not initially know how to do so. Here are a few webpages that my EDL 689 classes have developed. Both the students and I are very proud of them. Click here to go to Site 1 and here to go to Site 2! |

EDL 680 -- Cmap Concept Maps of Student Understandings of "Education Leadership"
In EDL 680, students are asked to develop two concept maps of their understanding of "education leadership." The first map provides a baseline of their understanding. The second map provides evidence of their understanding after having taken the course and having been introduced to theories and practices of education leadership. Here are a few examples of student maps.
EDL 664 Administrative Applications of the Computer/Technology for Administrators
This course was the first time the revision to EDL 664 was taught. Students were asked to create a website that would help educational administrators learn about, and use, educational technology. Students quickly found that educational administrators may or may not use certain educational technologies themselves, but that they did need to know about technology infrastructure, devices, and applications broadly to be able to budget for, and manage, them through key staff. Here are a few of their websites... |
093 Administrative Certification Intern Videos Related to Their In-School Projects
As part of the Internship, students are asked to develop a Personalized Internship Project (PIP) with their co-operating schools and/or districts. The PIP is a project to contribute to a core school/district initiative that will advance student success. Here are three videos from EDL 688 students that show the fruits of their year long PIP activity. The first video shows a school news cast featuring Mr. Rider's work on developing and implementing a Senior Capstone Course at his high school. The second video is from Ms. Baumgartner who worked with her students to celebrate and improve school culture.
